Litchi & Lime was created from a simple idea: some of the most important skills children develop are not learned from worksheets — they grow through stories, play, conversations and everyday experiences.

Created by Dr Lorette Pretorius, an Early Childhood Education lecturer, researcher and mom. Litchi & Lime brings together a love of early childhood learning with research-informed knowledge about how children learn to think, manage emotions, solve problems and navigate everyday challenges.

Dr Pretorius holds a PhD in Early Childhood Education, with research focusing on executive function — the thinking and self-regulation skills that help us plan, focus, adapt, manage our behaviour and keep going when things do not go as expected.

That knowledge inspired a playful question: What if young children could begin developing these important skills through characters and stories they love?

And so, Litchi & Lime and The Little Grove were born. 🌿

The thinking behind the stories

Every Little Grove adventure is designed around meaningful early childhood experiences — losing a race, having a big feeling, coping when plans change, waiting, making choices, solving problems and trying again.

Behind the playful stories are important developmental skills, including executive function and emotional intelligence. Children are gently encouraged to practise skills such as self-control, flexible thinking, emotional regulation, problem-solving, empathy and perseverance.

But to children, it should still feel like what childhood is supposed to feel like: a story, an adventure and an opportunity to play. 💚

From research to real childhood

The resources are designed to translate evidence-informed ideas from Early Childhood Education into simple, playful experiences that parents, caregivers, and educators can actually use with young children.

No complicated programmes. No pressure to get everything right. Just meaningful moments to THINK IT! FEEL IT! TRY IT!

The heart behind Litchi & Lime 🌿

Litchi & Lime grew from my love of early childhood education and a simple belief: that some of the most important skills children develop through everyday experiences.

As an early childhood education lecturer and researcher, my work has focused on how learners develop the skills they need to think, learn and grow. My PhD research explored executive function — the skills that help us plan, focus, manage emotions and behaviour, adapt and keep trying.

This knowledge inspired The Little Grove — a playful world where Litchi and Lime learn that growing up isn't about getting everything right. It's about learning to think, understand feelings, make kind choices, adapt and try again.
